What is purple-crowned lorikeet?

The purple-crowned lorikeet, also called the rainbow lorikeet, is a species of parrot found in eastern Australia, mainly along the eastern coast and nearby islands. They are small birds, measuring around 25cm in length and weighing only around 120g.

The plumage of purple-crowned lorikeets is highly variable, with a bright green body and a purple-blue crown. The chest and abdomen are often adorned with a yellow or orange colour. They have a strong, curved beak that is perfect for breaking open seeds and cracking nuts.

Purple-crowned lorikeets are social birds, often seen in pairs or small flocks. They are known for their playful behaviour and acrobatic abilities, such as hanging and playing upside-down. Their diet consists mainly of nectar, pollen, and fruits, but they also feed on insects and their larvae.

These lorikeets have a relatively short lifespan in the wild, averaging around 6-8 years. They are a popular pet bird due to their striking appearance and playful nature. However, pet ownership can lead to inappropriate diet, social isolation, and a lack of exercise, which can negatively affect their health and wellbeing. As a result, it is essential to ensure that they are provided with a suitable habitat and appropriate care.
